1.How many people visit their dentist with a toothache every year?
A) 5 million. Regular dental check ups can reduce this risk.

2.How many people suffer from gum disease at some point in their life?
A) 80%. This statistic makes gum disease the most common disease in the world.

3.What proportion of UK adults have 12 or more fillings?
A) One-third. Preventive care can reduce the amount of fillings needed in the future. (figures from BDA)

4.What percentage of people are not happy with how their teeth look?
A) 24%. There is a variety of cosmetic treatment available at New Square to improve your smile. (figures from National Smile Week Survey 2002)

5.How often should you change your toothbrush?
A) Four times a year. Despite this recommendation, most adults only change their toothbrush once every year

6.What proportion of the country have frequent dental check ups?
A) less than half

7.How many people are nervous about some kinds of dental treatment?
 A) Two-thirds. Many people are nervous about visiting the dentist, which is why we offer a scheme for nervous patients.

8.Out of the list, which items are bad for your teeth and/or gums?
Answers: (i)Smoking, (iv) Alcohol and (v) Sugary drinks. Smoking and drinking account for the majority of oral cancer (Cancer Research UK). Smoking can also cause bad breath, gum disease and tooth staining.
